Those two warriors of the waves – Jarrod Horner and Matt Mulder – returned to the Shoes Coliseum last weekend for a barnstorming start to the 2011 championship season.
The pair, who fought down to the wire for the 2011 crown, came in equal first after a southerly buster put paid to the open final, forcing a distribution of points across the top six placegetters in the semi-finals.
Reigning champ Horner and world No 2 Mulder are on top of the leaderboard with 15.5 points each, followed by Nathan Daley (14.5), Kim Anderson (14.5), Dom (13.5) and Tyler Barnes (12.5).
The first event of the year was an absolute screamer.
New members, new tricks, great waves, great vibe, excellent performances across the board.
The Juniors witnessed a smorgasbord of raging manoeuvres from all contestants, and lead to a final that surpassed anything seen in 2010.
Harrison Martin grabbed top honours, just shaving Jacob Boylan, Reece Moffatt and 2010 SuperGroms Champ Nathan Martin.
The Groms set the Reef on fire with a vintage final that saw Ethan Jackson coming home first ahead of a fast improving Roan O’Sullivan, Dion Earle, Travis, Ben Boylan and Sam.
It was great to see a big turnout of contestants for the day, enlivened by a whole squad of new members, plus new parents surveying the scene and sampling finely cooked snags, courtesy of Paul Martin.
Leah Maclean, as usual, was on the scene to photograph just about every ride. So check the Gallery for the good, bad and the ugly.
New surf DVDs, courtesy of Puresea Surf Shop went to Jarrod Horner, Kim Anderson, Harrison Martin and Jacob Boylan.
A set of fins, from new club sponsor STC, was snavelled by Eathan Jackson.
The next event is on 5-6 March.
