With all four championships up for grabs, and with the surfing world following every ride on a global webstream, the Shoes reef kicked in with the best waves of the year for the vital November pointscore.
Reputations were at stake, trophy positions on the line, the pressure mounting…it was the sought of scenario upon which Hollywood movies are mounted. The word went out and before long Disney Pictures were ringing for exclusive rights to every piece of the action!
And why not…the set-up had drama, comedy, family feuds, sunshine and rain, wave action equal to any Triple Crown showdown, frying sausages, batteries that refused to work in the loud hailer, men, women, boys and girls staring each other down, a chopper filming overhead, dancing dolphins in the line-up…it was a script writer’s dream.
And then to top it off, three sets of brothers were in the firing line to make for one of the best finishes to a competitive season on record.
But as there is not enough space to tell all that went on on this fateful Shoes day, so let’s cut to the chase.
Matt Cook won the Open, downing Rhys Moffat, Joel Moffat, Tyler Barnes, Cam Timewell and Jacob Boylan.
Yes, that’s right, Jesse and Jarrod Horner – the two frontrunners for the title – missed the final.!!
Harrison Martin topped the pops in the Juniors, edging out Nathan Martin, Jedd Felice and Nathan Hatheier.
Yes, that’s right, points leader for the crown, Andrew Petoumenos, went down in the semis!!
Defending champ Dion Earle shifted up a gear to snatch the SuperGroms final, just points clear of Lachlan Hickey, Shannon Hatheier and Hans Boerma.
Yes, that’s right, frontrunner all year Travis Heaps, was beaten in the semis!!
And the race for the inaugural Masters Trophy was also full of controversy, and Greg Ferrow and Pete Rackemann jousted heat after heat.
Man, like the Melbourne Cup, the Stewards are combing through the video highlights and every judging sheet to ensure leftover blackness from Halloween has not sent the whole Shoes shebang into a parallel universe.
Stay tuned for the big announcements on the year-end calculations as Chief Steward Greg Horner delves deep into his powers of arithmetic.
What we do know for sure is that Dion Earle and Harrison Martin picked up Puresea Surf Surf vouchers, while Cookie and Ryhs Moffat earned legropes and fins from STC.
