The waves turned on, the sunshine flooded the site, the surfing sessions were giant for the final world contest of the year on the Reef that Rules.
Shoes was a place of splendour as members across Open, Juniors, Over 40s and Grommets took advantage of a constant stream of swells to showcase their ability to shred, slash, pulverise, get barrelled, go down the line at the speed to time, make mince meat of every wall that moved!
It was Shoes heaven, with every contestant pushing the limits, and knowing that results would determine which riders take the titles and back-up places for season 2016.
With a crowd that the NRL can only dream about urging the surfers on, the fireworks just kept coming.
In the Opens, the four contenders for the championship – Rhys Moffat, Jarrod Horner, Matty Cook and Drew Kelly – all made the final after skipping through their earlier heats to set-up an epic showdown.
Every manoeuvre in the book was on display as each rider pushed the limits to get an advantage as the minutes ticked away.
The judges were hard pressed to split the awesome foursome, but in the end it was Rhys who got the nod, followed by Jarrod, Matty and Drew.
It was just the same for the Over 40s Brigade, with Critta Durante edging out Brett Daintry, Steve Cryer, John Bonello and Simon Boylan in a final that had a scoreline that was as exciting and as close as the Shark’s Grand Final victory.
The same could be said of the Juniors and Grommets, with Blake Sawtell, Nathan Wedesweiler, Cody and Darcy Hill setting new heights of performance excellence in the Juniors, and Charlie, Oscar, Chae, Luca and Luke looking like new recruits flown in from the WSL Tour in the barnstorming lunge for Grommet supremacy.
Not only was the surfing exciting across the day, but the results will have a serious impact on where the trophies for season 2016 end up going on the Night of Nights – the Shoes Season 2016 Presentation at the South Cronulla Bowling Club on Saturday 3 December.
