The Shoes grommet brigade went ballistic on Father’s Day 2016, with topline surfing across the board.
With a solid swell pouring onto the Reef that Rules, the youngsters cut loose with every manoeuvre in the book.
The fireworks were so outrageous and inspiring that it put the recent WSL world title tournament in Fiji in the shade.
Even the judges were hollowing loud at every barrel, head-dip, slashing round-house, floater and gouging bottom turn.
Defending Groms champ Jarvis Earle was brilliant in winning his heat and then triumphing again in the final.
But the pint-sized blonde bombshell by no means had it his own way, with only a few points separating him from second placegetter Charlie Chegwidden, Jetson Kuch (third) and Sax Withers (fourth).
Harry, Ethan, Tom and Kai also put in barnstorming performances!
A combined Open and Over 40s Final was dramatic to say the least.
Although the sets were fewer and far between compared with the Groms, the cream of the Older Brigade punished every wave that came through.
There was barely light between the Top Six – Drew Kelly, Matty Cook, Steve Cryer, Johnno Bonello, Guy Turner and Damo in that order.
The next championship event is 1-2 October, with the back-up date of 15-16.
