Two time Club Champion Jarrod Horner returned to the winner’s circle with a gripping victory in the Open Division final of the September showdown, while Dion Earle took out the Junior final and Charlie Chedwiggin was on fire in the SuperGroms.
The Reef poured on the swell, and every competitor across all three divisions took full advantage to cut loose with levels of surfing anarchy that puts the World Surf League in the shade.
The elder Horner, with his dad Greg (a Life Member of the Club) looking on, has been out of the loop most of the season, but more than made up for his stop-go appearances with a dashing brand of wave demolition that was a reminder of his previous club titles.
It was an Open final that had all four competitors pulling out the stops to gain a points advantage. The lead shifted numerous times, with reigning titleholder Matty Cook , former champ Rhys Moffat and his older brother Joel pushing the envelope throughout the 20 minute showdown.
Typically it was Jarrod’s electrifying last ride that cracked open the deadlock – edging Rhys by a point, Matty by two points and Joel by three.
The results mean the race for the 2015 Crown is well and truly an open house, with only October and November contests remaining.
Multiple Groms Champ and Junior titleholder Dion was in dashing form throughout the contest – but he needed to be to stifle the top form of fellow finalists Blake Sawtell and Coady.
While the ranks of junior riders has been sparse this season because of surfers working on weekend etc, there has been no lack of spirit, determination and sheer surfing prowess in the division.
The real highlight of the day, tho, was the sensational performances seen right across the Team Groms contingent.
If the San Francisco 49s were playing surfing and not American Football, the Club would have ignored Jaryd Hayne and be chasing down members of the Groms Brigade.
Charlie Chedwiggin showed in crash-tacking the final that his recent trip to Bali really solidified his wave riding. The Blonde Bombshell was all over the waves like a rash, and meant that not even brilliant displays by Luca Durante (2nd), Harry Fisher (3rd), Fin Moore (4th) and Koby Napper (5th) could reign in his push for victory.
Charlie picked up a Gift Voucher from Puresea Surf Shop for his victory.
So now it’s on to the October pointscore – first weekend being 3-4 and the back-up date 17-18.
