Reigning SuperGroms champion, Jarvis Earle, is back with a vengeance, taking out the opening round of the 2015 season.
The waves were small, but clean for the Groms brigade, who hit the Reef with all guns blazing.
It was almost a case of dejavu, with the headliners from last year’s world title showdown showing all the snap, crackle and pop that earned team Shoes global television coverage in 2014.
Jarvis got home No 1 in the final, but his rivals were all breathing down his neck.
Coming in second was Jetson Kuch, followed by Sam Canuak, Koby Napper, Kai Withers and Casey Earle.
Despite the tame conditions, the wealth of stylish performances bodes well for another top class season.
Former world champion and Shoes fan from the 70s and 80s, Peter Townend was in the crowd and gave the Groms a big wrap for their efforts.
PT was in Cronulla to help celebrate 100 years of surfing in the Shire. The celebrations pay homage to the Duke’s visit to Cronulla Beaches in 1915.
PT is hoping to pull off one of his signature Soul Arches on the Reef before he returns to California.
With the swell less than perfect, the Open and Junior showdowns now move to 21-22 February.
