Windswept waves meant little as the club’s world-beating Junior and Grom surfers cut loose to add extra intrigue for this year’s down to the wire championship races.
While the conditions weren’t ideal for the Octoberfest round, the level of wave-smashing was off the Richter Scale, making it very difficult for the judges to separate the contenders in both Divisions.
It was like a WSL event multiplied by 10, with barrels, reverse airs, carving turns and knockout cutbacks.
With reigning Junior Champ Dion Earle unavailable, the top three finalists Henry Fuller, Coady and Nathan Wedesweiler went bananas in the trying conditions – giving the many hundreds of onlookers plenty to hoot and holler about.
It was the same whirlwind set of performances in the Super Groms final, with Koby Napper sealing victory in the final minutes from a stunning set of performances by Luca Durante, Charlie Chedwiggin, Harry Fisher, Tom Callander and Connor Natoli.
All the Groms were aware that defending titleholder Jarvis Earle was away, and made every post a winner.
As the conditions deteriorated it was decided there were not enough waves to hold the Open Division. So now it’s on to the last contest of the season – on 7-8 November with the back-up date 14-15.
All titles are up for grabs, so keep those motors running!
