Season 2013 is shaping as a blockbuster in the SuperGroms, with Lachlan Hickey and Dion Earle going hammer and tongs for supremacy.
The waves may have been small, but there was enough wall and bowl – and clean faces – for the Groms to cut loose in their second comp of the year.
Every competitor made the most of the conditions – but none more electric than Hickey and Earle.
The two blonde bombshells each won their preliminary heat to set-up a monumental showdown in the final. And neither of them left any questions unanswered, as the points see-sawed with every gouging turn, whacko off the top, shredding cuttie and white water dazzle.
In the end, only two points divided the pair, with Hickey taking No 1 slot – his second victory in a row and Earle’s second straight runner-up slot.
Not far behind in a final worthy of live international TV coverage, were Samual Lee (3rd), Blake Sawtell (4th), Henry Fuller (5th) and Sam Shriek (6th).
The Junior comp was equally thrilling, with Nathan Martin clocking up close to maximum points for his two highest scoring rides to edge out a fast moving Jedd Felice, followed by Xavier Izzard and Jai Withers.
Jai, the daughter of Open Comp high performer Mel Withers, showed she is definitely one to watch after winning her heat and then putting in a strong performance in the final.
Shannon Hatheier, daughter of Open Comp shredder Mel Hatheier, was also very impressive in her early round heat.
Alas, the swell didn’t hold in size enough to allow Open Championship competitors to get a start to their season. But all is not lost. 27-28 APRIL is now show time for Shoes’ senior slashers!
In the meantime, hats off to the Club’s fantastic sponsorss –
