The leftovers of a solid mid-week swell didn’t phase any of the SuperGroms competitors of the August pointscore for Sandshoes Boardriders, with attacking wave riding the flavour of the day.
With current title frontrunner Travis Heaps a no-show, the other prime contenders cut loose in the small, tricky conditions to post some amazing rides. It was a case of striking while the iron is hot – none better than the hard-going backside attack of Lachlan Hickey.
Hickey, who earned the 2011 season Encouragement Award – a PCC surfboard – burst out of the boxes in his heat and then kept up the pressure in the final to pip Xavier Izzard, the winner of the previous two events.
While Hickey drove up and through the white water sections, Izzard used his trademark bottom turns to maked the most of any open wave faces.
Reigning champ, the Earle of Pearl, was his normal go-getting best, but wave count was a deciding factor for both him and Ethan Jackson, who came home third and fourth respectively.
James McGree put in a solid performance to gain fifth spot, while Riley Lee was only a few points off the pace to garner sixth.
The competition race is now more evenly poised going into the September showdown.
The Open and Junior World Title clashes are set for 18-19 August.
