Barnstorming waves provided the perfect amphitheatre for a cracker August World Title battle royale.
With swell pouring out of the south, competitors in all four divisions did themselves proud with a level of surfing action that the WSL can only dream about.
It was a whole day of swashbuckling action as riders slashed, belted, carved, barrelled and shredded in demanding conditions.
In all divisions, the difference in the pointscores was waver-thin.
The four riders to help their championship chances most were Matty Cook (Open), Brett Dainty (Over 40s), Koby Naper (Juniors) and Jarvis Earle (Groms).
The quartet were totally in the zone when the pressure was on.
Cookie got home ahead of the Moffat brothers Joel and Rhys and Jacob Boylan, who put in a special appearance after several years away from the Reef that Rules.
The Over 40s is always a torrid affair, and this time Brett edged out Simon Boylan, Critta Durante and Qantas Dave.
In the Juniors, Mr Napper pipped reigning champ Dion, followed by Henry, Nathan and Coady.
The Grommets shoot-out, as expected, was a sight to see, with every surfer taking on the trying conditions with every trick in the book.
Jarvis, who holds the title, was in brilliant form, but so were the other three contenders – Jetson Kuch (2nd), Harry Fisher (third) and Maxim Rayer (fourth).
So with another great tournament done and dusted, it’s time to look forward to September, with the two dates available being 3-4 and 17-18.
