The Surf Gods finally delivered some pounding overhead lines that made for a special September Comp.
Contest Director Guy Turner made the right call that saw momentous level wave demolitions across all three divisions.
The super highlight was a 10 out of 10 score by Mick Durante for a ride that saw him disappear inside three caves of an overhead screamer set.
Mick, a Shoes Legend and former Club President – and younger brother of Shoes stalwart Chris Durante – was on fire in a Masters final that had spectators hooting and wailing as competitors charged every wave in scenes that the World Surfing League can only dream about. Brett Daintry, came in second, followed by Chris and Guy.
There were similar wave explosions in the Open Final, with Matty Cook, Reece Moffat, Luca Durante and Jazmyn Turner doing the equivalent of bombshells that had the judges spinning as the competitors engineered high level and absorbing manoeuvres one after the other – giving the judges a hardtime in determining the placings.
As fate would have it, Mr Cook came in at No 1, followed by Reece, Luca and Jaz.
The day of surfing eminence finished off with a head-turning battle royale in the Juniors, with all four competitors taking no prisoners in some hard-hitting overhead walls.
The judges found it hard to separate the awesome foursome as all competitors turned on the fireworks, with a parade of head dips, gouging bottom turns and spanking off the lip cutbacks.
Coming in first was Zai Brown, followed by Joel Cornock, Ryan van der Weegan and Ethan Shipley.
If the surfing brilliance keeps on keeping on, the battle for top guns will continue all the way to November, making for a first rate Presentation Night at South Cronulla Bowling Club on Friday 6 December.
Next up is the two dates in October: 20-21 and 27-28.
