Solid clean swell and sunny conditions prevailed for the final world title contest of the season, with surfers in all three divisions going off!
Championship titles were all on a knife’s edge going into the comp – and none of the chief contenders let their chances down. Indeed, every manoeuvre in the book was on show – deep barrels, 360 airs, roundhouse cutbacks, lengthy floaters, you name it!
In the Open Division, it was hand to hand combat as reigning champ Reece Moffat took on his No 1 nemesis in Matty Cook to gain the ascendancy on the points table. They both went as hard as possible, but it was Jedd Felice who surged in the final 10 minutes to claim victory.
Cookie came in second and Reece third, followed by Tommy Mulder, Benny Cook and Joel Moffat.
The Junior smash and grab was also a sensational affair with Marcus Moffat, Dion Earle and Shannon Hatheier all going hammer and tongs to gain the advantage. As the swell grew on the lower tide, so did the degree of difficulty of the manoeuvres punched out.
When the hooter sounded it was Marcus home first by a mere point from Dion, and Shannon only two points further off the pace.
The final countdown for the SuperGroms had all the hallmarks of a life and death tilt in the Colosseum, with every competitor rising to the occasion.
Reigning champ Jarvis Earle was on fire, but so were other key contenders – all of them showing remarkable skills to overcome the fast sections. No petrol was left in the tank by any of the finalists.
And to prove the point, Jarvis just pipped Marley, who just pipped Koby, who just pipped Jetson, who just pipped Luke Coady, who just pipped Charlie.
All in all a memorable way to end the championship season…so memorable in fact that all the footage has been showing around the globe. ASP officials are also how trying to work out how they can get their tournaments to be just as good. Fat chance of that happeing!
