The battle for supremacy in the Open Championship is turning into a dog fight between reigning No 1 Rhys Moffat and former runner-up Matt Cook, with both surfers excelling in the August showdown.
With the swells sweeping in from the south, the Reef summoned up great conditions for performance surfing in all three divisions.
Moffat and Cookie were slam-dunking in the heats, and then revved up the action to even greater heights in a final that saw all six contestants taking no prisoners in the equivalent of a wave-riding extravaganza.
Rhys just snuck home on the back of a few extra roundhouse carves, pushing his points advantage for the 2014 crown just that little bit more.
Coming in third was former grommet and Junior sensation Nathan Hatheier, followed by Johnno, Joel Moffat and the perennial wave slasher Mel Withers.
The Junior final also offered up class surfing, with multi-championship winner Dion Earle strengthening his grip on the 2014 title, with a dashing performance to edge out Sam Lee and a swashbuckling Shannon Hatheier.
The SuperGroms never fail to amaze and entertain – and the August smash and grab on the Reef was no exception.
All contestants put on a show that easily outshone the recent ASP world title event in JBay, with Jarvis Earle playing the role of Mike Fanning and Sam Canuak the role of Joel Parkinson in a potboiler that also produced wonderful performances from Sax Withers, Jetson Kuch and Casey Earle.
The points tables for all three divisions are very tight, so what happens in the last three events of the season will make the difference.
The next comp is scheduled for 6-7 September, with the back-up date 20-21.
