Rhys Moffat turned on an immaculate display of dogged surfing to clinch the July pointscore and deny Open Championship frontrunner Jesse Horner a fourth straight finals victory – on his 18th birthday!
Horner turned on the fireworks throughout the event, including a mesmerising perfect 10 for a Hail Mary 360 in his semi-final, but former Junior Champ Moffat was the more consistent in the heat that mattered most.
The swell pumped throughout the contest, allowing for dynamic performances in all three divisions – with Moffat excelling just like Andrew Petoumenos in taking the Junior final and Travis Heaps in nailing the Super Groms showdown.
Horner came home second to Moffat and still holds a commanding advantage on the leaderboard. Will Elmms was third, Grege Ferrow fourth and Jesse’s dad Greg Horner fifth.
Resigning Open champ Jarrod Horner made the semi-finals, keeping alive his guest for a back-to-back appearance on the year-end podium.
Petoumenos took apart the clean swells with powerful turns and cutback combinations to get the better of Logan Weir and Ben Boylan.
The competition ikn the Super Groms was no less fierce. All contenders were in the hunt right up to the final siren. In the end, Travis hot home by a mere point from Xavier Izzard, followed closely by defending champ Dion Earle, Eathan Jackson, Lachlan Hickey and Hans Boerman.
And so another nail-biting, frenzied and action-packed Shoes contest came to an end, leaving all and sujndry looking forward to the next Clash of the Titans on 4-5 August.
