The sun was shining, the swell was pumping and competitors were charging!
All together, the long awaited September comp laid on surfing fireworks that the WSL Tour can only dream about.
Surfers in all four divisions let loose in beautiful weather and waves – soaking up the opportunity to chase down championship points as well as deep barrels and slashing off-the tops.
With hundreds of spectators looking on, the Shoes brigade went into overdrive, with no prisoners taken.
The Groms were a standout, with reigning champ Jarvis claiming the No 1 spot, followed by Sam, Luca, Chae, Evie, Zai and Alec.
It was blockbuster action from start to finish, with slashing and head-dips and rollercoaster bottom turns coming at a speed that had the judges’ heads spinning.
The Open category was a fiesta of slashes, floaters, barrels and lip crackers, with six contenders making the charge. Tommy came in first, with barely an inch away from Jasmin, Dean, Rich, Keiran and Matty.
The fireworks were fully on display in the Juniors as well, with a full-house of contenders raging and ramping as if their lives depended on it. Luke came home as the speed of sound to claim No 1, followed by Jordan, Nathan, Blake, Toby and Henry.
Not to be left out in the cold on a dreamy spring Sunday, the Over 40s brigade were bristling with fire and brimstone. Reigning champ Brett extended his points advantage but only by a hair’s breadth from Cabo, Critta and Guy.
And so with two contests remaining, the battle for supremacy is very much alive. The October dates are 21-22 and 28-29.
BUT DON’T FORGET – NEXT WEEKEND IS THE RETURN OF THE BATTLE OF THE REEFS, AT THE POINT. CONTEST KICKS-OFF AT AROUND 8AM, SO LONG AS THERE IS SWELL. SHOES TEAM IS ACROSS OPEN, SENIORS, GROMMETS AND LADIES.
