With four monthly pointscore events remaining, the battles for the 2009 championships are running hot.
The leaders in all three divisions – Jack Irvin (Open), Jesse Horner (Juniors) and Ben Boylan (Super Groms) – are firing on all fronts but only Ben has a whopping lead.
Jack knocked-off the final of the July pointscore to ease three points clear of Matt Holman (who placed second in July), with Matt Cook, Drew Kelly, Jarrod Horner, Marty Shipley and John Tucker all still very much in contention.
Cookie was third in last weekend’s contest, held in reasonable conditions that offered opportunities for some great tubes, head-dips and gouging bottom turn-slash combinations.
Mark Lindsell took 4th, JT was 5th and Mitchell Hodges surfed exceedingly well to grab 6th.
With Jesse Horner away, the Junior guns unloaded, with Reece Moffat, Nathan Hatheier, Jacob Boylan and Harrison Martin all putting in the big efforts to jam up the points table.
Jesse is now only two points clear of the field on 48 points. Jacob is on 46, Reece on 45 and Harrison at 36.
Ben continues to improve, as revealed by claiming his fourth straight pointscore victory. He’s now on 55 points – 20 points clear of Nathan Martin (2nd in last weekend’s final), Andrew Petoumenos, Dion Earle and Jae Withers.
With the August showdown already looming, the competitive buzz is very strong at Shoes. The level of surfing performance across all three divisions has picked up several grooves in recent months.
Next event is August 8-9 or 22-23
