Small but clean and contestable waves were on offer for the July world title showdown – and it was the Moffat clan that made hay while the sun shines.
With whales breaching on the horizon and dolphins gambolling in the bay, it was a perfect setting for members to go wild in all divisions – and it was Poppa Dave Moffat and his two sons – Rhys and Joel -who created history by competing in the final, along with Matty Cook, Jarrod Horner and Tom Lotter.
With an hour provided for the final, all competitors worked hard to get the best out of the trying conditions.
Rhys clobbered the last wave of the event to edge out a charging Jarrod, followed by Cookie in third, Joel in fourth, Tom in fifth and Dave in 6th.
Both Matty and Tom added heroics to the contest by clocking up plenty of nifty nose rides and spinners on longboards.
The Grommets were typically outrageous, snapping off strong manoeuvres and combo theatrics through out their heats and the final.
In the washup, Luca pipped Oscar, Ryan and Jackson.
While Over 40s contenders – Johnno Bonello, Dave Moffat, Steve Cryer, Simon Boylan and new member Guy Turner – surfed in the open division because of the unpredictable wave conditions, all will have their points recalibrated for the Over 40s Division championship.
So, with another contest under the belt, it’s now on to August, with the two assigned dates of 6-7 and 20-21. Be there or be somewhere else less important!
