The August pointscore, held in solid 1 to 1.5 metre waves, produced some fantastic surfing – and turnaround results in all three divisions.
Peter Hvass, a sometime competitor because of work commitments, showed he has not lost any of his competitive zip with a gung-ho set of performances in the Opens to grab first place and move into the Top 10.
Hvassie was pushed all the way but a couple of short barrels pushed him clear in a six man final to register his first victory of the season.
Matt Cook improved his 2009 title chances with a second placing to push his points tally to 63 – 1 ahead of Matt Holman, who bowed out in the semis.
Chris Durante had his foot planted on the peddle to take third and put a bit of a lid on the surge of championship frontrunner Jack Irvin.
Jack, who is striving for his second straight crown, finished fourth, but still holds down an 11 point lead overall.
Matt Mulder grabbed fifth place and Jarrod Horrner sixth to hold down fourth placing on the leaderboard.
In a feisty junior showdown, Jacob Boylan edged out Harrison Martin, Reece Moffat and Nathan Hatheier in a blow-for-blow final.
Jacob has now moved to the top of the championship ladder with 57 points, three clear of Reece, with Jesse Horner (who missed the event) on 48 points – 1 point adrift of Harrison.
In a major upset, Andrew Petoumenos ripped everything to get the better of Dion Earle, Ben Boylan and Nathan Martin in the Super Groms final.
Andrew just keeps getting better and better, and pipped the field with some clever wave selection.
Benny Boy Boylan sits on 65 points, with Andrew on 45, Nathan on 43, Dion on 39, Jae Withers on 27 and Shannon Hatheier on 27.
The August comp produced a big turnout and plenty of great surfing and good laughs.
The waves held-up for most of the day and not too many heats experienced lags. So thanks a lot Huey!
Appreciation to Paul Martin for playing chef and producing top snags and bacon and egg sambos.
Mark Campbell did a roaring trade on the new Hoodies. There are not too many left, so those who haven’t picked-up their order, drop around to Mark’s place at 7 Gowrie Street, Cronulla.
Cheers Sid
