A solid south swell kicked-in to provide a super canvass on which Shoes surfers were able to paint masterpieces for a dazzling July comp.
The waves thundered all day as both Open and Groms competitors showed guts and glory to send the scores off the Richter scale – and captivate a world audience watching the live stream.
Both the main Reef and the Alley were pumping, providing plenty of ammunition for all competitors to do what they do best – shred the sets.
Everyone knows that results in July have a major bearing on the championship race – and that meant every surfer went for it like their life depended on it – and none were better than eventual winners Tommy The Gun Mulder (Open) and Jarvis the Pearl of Earle (Groms).
Not that these two had the fun, games and dramas to themselves. Both were pushed to the limit by fellow competitors, all eager to gain the advantage as the titles race countdown grows heavier and heavier.
There were barrels, head-dips, gigantic slashes, vertical re-entries, gauging cutbacks, massive floaters and over the falls wipeouts that added up to a series of performances that the heavyweights competing in the Jay Bay Pro can only dream about.
Tommy was firing in the Open – but that didn’t stop his rivals from blasting off torpedoes of their own, with two time champ Rhys Moffat, defending champ Matty Cook, Critta Durante and Drew Kelly shredding everything that moved.
It was a finale that had more moves and shakes, more suspense and daring than a Game and Thrones episode!
Not that the action in the SuperGroms was anything less than scenes out of the Bold and Beautiful.
While Jarvis was in sterling form, he had to be to fend off a tsunami of relentless rides from Koby Nappa, Maxime Rayer and Jetson Kuch.
Indeed, every Grom competitor rose to the occasion, denying the thunderous conditions to grace THE REEF with courage, tenacity and brilliance, including Kye Withers, Luca Durante, Fin Moore, Riley Lee, Marlee Moore and Sam Cornock, to name a few.
So now it’s onto the August showdown, with opening dates of 1-2, and back-up dates of 15-16.
