In season 2016 – the 44th year of the Club’s existence – the big movers and shakers were Jarrod Horner (Open), Dion Earle (Juniors), Jarvis Earle (SuperGroms) and Brett Daintry (Over 40s).
The four surfers were heralded and crowned at the Club Presentation Night on 3 December – receiving their much deserved trophies from World Champion surfer Pam Burridge.
The “Awesome Foursome” never had it easy during the season – indeed they were pushed to the limit by fellow competitors in all four divisions.
In all cases the No 1 slots were open for taking right up to and including the final tournament of the year – an event that attracted international TV coverage and a massive onsite viewing audience.
Special thank you to Club Secretary-Treasurer Carol Gillespie, Web Master Leah Maclean and Photo and Video Specialist Ian Macca Macdonald.

Just in case anybody was wondering what the John Murray Award is all about.
John Murray epitomised what we all love about The Reef. Friendly, welcoming, inclusive and above all fun. There was nothing John loved more than paddling out at Shoes and catching some waves with his mates. At 67, John fell off more waves than he made, but that didn’t bother him in the least. He didn’t surf Shoes comp every month to win, he did it to spend 20 Minutes in the water at the place he loved with just 3 mates! John was a fantastic contributor to the Club and fiercely loyal. If John saw a new face in the water, he was always ready to have a chat and introduce himself. It is that sort of attitude that ensures even when there’s a small NE swell and 30 guys on a break built for 8, the locals are shown enough respect to still get their share of waves regardless of surfing ability.
Charlie Chegwidden is just 14 years old and already demonstrating those JR qualities. The fact that he happens to be a gun surfer is beside the point, he always has a smile for everyone, has a great time, shows respect for others and is fiercely loyal to the break he loves. Qualities that will ensure The Reef will continue to Rulle for many years.
A well deserved winner of the inaugural John Murray Award. Congratulation Charlie
Johno

Thankyou Simon,so very well said! Yes, Johnny just loved EVERYTHING about Sandshoes & the people who represent it.I was so touched & moved to tears by all of the kind words that were said about Johnny on Saturday night. For me ,just chatting to & being in the company of some of the wonderful members & their families it is not hard to understand why Sandshoes meant so much to him.I am grateful for the respect that you all continue to give Johnny & for making me feel so welcome.
Many, many thanks to Simon for coming up with the John Murray award as well as the very moving tribute,to Sid for honouring Johnnys memory & keeping it alive & also for the very beautiful photo of John that you gave to me.Thankyou also to all of you special people who took the time to come & have a chat with me & to offer your support.
