The Reef that Rules turned on the swell to allow a triumphant start to the new World Championship campaign.
And boy oh boy, did the members in all four decisions take full advantage of a non-stop parade of waves, ranging from belly high to overhead.
There was a total, red hot commitment to non-stop high-end manoeuvres, with barrels, head-dips, floaters, gauging bottom turns, slashing cutbacks, nose rides and the odd 360!
The mood across the athletes was palpable – no one wanted to take prisoners!
The battles for supremacy played out before a massive crowd of members, family and friends, with Ian Macca Macdonald snapping away, and Foxtel sending footage around the globe.
In the Open Final, Matty Cook was sweeping across the righthanders on his sleek longboard, popping off roundhouse cutbacks and lots of body bending turns to just pip Tom Lotter, new member Nick and Mel Hatheier.
The audience was stoked to see Mel take on the blokes and give them plenty to worry about with her go-for-it attitude and plenty of down-the-line charges.
Defending Over 40s Champion Brett Daintry made it very obvious that he has no plans to relinguish the crown, with a powerful display of slamming bottom turns and cranking off the lips. His fellow competitors were also full of fire and brimstone, with Guy Turner coming in second, John Bonello third and Critta Durante fourth…with the scorelines only a match stick between them.
As per usual, the Grommets were a band of bandits on the prowl. They didn’t so much as give notice but laid down the law that had mums, dads, uncles, aunties, grand mothers and grand fathers soaking up the high velocity of mini testosterone.
Reigning No 1 Jarvis Earle was his usual gallant, fast moving and manoeuvre-plus machine that made it hard for his equally fired-up, strong and ambitious competitors – all of whom turned in valiant efforts.
Coming in second was Sam Cornock, third was Jetson Kuch, fourth was Marley Moore and fifth was Finley Moore.
