Contrary to recent experience, Shoes hasn’t completely lost the plot when it comes to providing waves for world title contests.
After a drought lasting months, the Reef served up some spankers to the great joy of the SuperGroms and Juniors.
With the sun blazing and still winds, competitors went off as the waves got bigger and cleaner as the day wore on.
Jedd Felice was in frightening form to ace out some sterling surfing from his competitors to claim the Junior Final – and in doing so moved to an almost unbeatable position on the 2013 championship ratings.
Jedd, with the only tube of the day in the final, got the better of Roan Sullivan, Logan Weir and Jae Withers in a showdown that had a mass crowd of spectators hooting and hollering.
The Groms battle for supremacy was an absolute thriller, with all the youngsters firing in the heats, semis and grand final.
The two frontrunners for the Groms title – Dion Earle and Lachlan Hickey – went hammer and tongs to the delight of special guest Kelly Slater. The pair kept firing off big backside manoeuvres one after the other to give the judges a torrid time.
In the end, Dion pipped another standout performer in Blake, with Lachlan in third, followed by Dane Coady and Jarvis Earle.
The size and scope of the waves never got the better of the Groms, with brave performances from Jarvis, Caitlan Campbell, Marley and Fin Moore, Casey Earle, Jamie Campbell, Kye Withers, Sax Withers, Luke Coady, Jackson Hickey and Sam Cornok.
So now it’s onto the hoped for final event for the Open Division on 16-17 November. And if that weekend doesn’t work, then it’s the weekend of 23-24.
The night to end all nights is set for Saturday 30 November at the South Cronulla Bowling Club. All members, family and friends are invited.
